I grew up in the 90's in Portugal and like every kid at that time I grew up watching TV. One of the things that I loved the most was waking up early on weekends and watching a bunch of cartoons.
Teenege Mutant Ninja Turtle and Dragon Ball were amoung my favourites.
Generalist channels reserved the weekend mornings to cartoons so kids could have their TV time.
Channels were all we had. To watch different things you swapped channel. If no channel was showing something you were interested in, the only option you had was to use a cassette or later a DVD player, but that meant you have to have the cassette or DVD already.
We did not had a bast abundance of options like we do nowadays. Streaming chanels like Netflix, Disney, HBO, etc, made watching TV series and movies super easy. Select show, continue watching, start from beginning, select episode, are such powerfull features that we could only dream of some years earlier.
At the time, this revolution with the mix of being fed up by ads and bad content made me stop watching TV. When I wanted to watch a TV show I'd stream it. If I want some educational content, watching a talk or a random video, Youtube got me. I liked the control.
I been years like this. But recently, I realized that, a lot of times I don't know what to watch. Sometimes I don't have good recommendations, other times I want something new but don't know what.
And with a lot of content and services to choose from, I got choice paralysis.
Choice paralysis is a situation where an individual is faced with so many options that they become overwhelmed and unable to make a decision.
It's tiring to always have to choose something. I think a lot of people had the experience of going to Netflix, trying to choose something and endup scrolling a lot just to give up in the end without having something to watch.
So that's where TV actually shines. Sometimes you just want to see what's going on. By having a programation set, you can see what's happening without having to commit. It's easy to just do a quick zapping through the channels and sometimes, you will be delighted by some great content.
So I gave another chance to TV and (re)found the joy of zapping.
Some movies that surprised me: Pretty woman, We bought a zoo, Derailed.
I only watched these movies because I caught them playing halfway through some scene that got my attention. I ended up enjoying them a lot. It was a really nice surprise that TV presented me.
